There are many uses for making your own vanilla bean extract. You can control the flavor, but most importantly you can control the quality. Vanilla beans come in many flavors and sizes and the prices vary immensely. Some beans have floral aromas while others have a bit more fruity ones. I’ve been using my own vanilla extract for years because once you realize how much more flavor it has, it’s nearly impossible to return to the store bought stuff.
Homemade Vanilla Bean Extract

Cooking timeminutes
Ingredients
8 oz. Glass Bottle or Jar
4-7 Vanilla Beans
1 Cup Vodka (I’ve also used rum in the past)
Directions
- Carefully slice each bean lengthwise and put in the bottle. Pour in the vodka. Shake every 2-3 weeks for the best effect. Make sure you store it in a cool and dry place. I keep mine in a cupboard at the back so it’s not constantly pulled in and out. Store for 8 weeks before first use.
- You can remove the beans if you like, but if you leave them in, the flavor will continue to develop, just make sure once you get low that you add more alcohol and beans.
